Through money raised from Race #5, Velo Amis and Chasin’ for Chalfin got a standing frame for 28-year-old Kurt Lane, a passenger in a car accident that left him paralyzed in November, 2016. Once an active soccer player, hiker, cyclist and runner, Kurt is grateful to friend Jake Chalfin, who visited him in the hospital after the accident. “I was so fortunate to have someone like Jake looking after me,” Kurt says. “He basically became my mentor.”
A week after Kurt left rehab, he discovered he was getting the standing frame. “Jake called and told me he wanted to give back and share the race proceeds with other people who are going through what he is going through,” Kurt says.
For individuals with paralysis, standing frames help them stand throughout the day, rather that stay seated in a wheel chair, and reduce the effects of osteoporosis and assists with blood flow to the legs. How cool is that?
This year the Trail Run Series donated $9,000 to Chasin for Chalfin.
Over the years Chasin’ for Chalfin has evolved and now shares race proceeds with other individuals needing adaptive equipment and organizations who support individuals with such needs. Follow Chasin for Chalfin here. Learn more about this non-profit organization here.
This year the race series brought in $35,000+, all benefitting local organizations.
Thanks to these runners, and the many sponsors and volunteers, here’s what we gave back to the community:

Originally named the Brandywine Valley Association (BVA), the Brandywine Red Clay Alliance (BRC) became the organization’s new name in 2015.
